Employee Motivation

Person motivation is the level of passion, energy, attention, and creativity an employee’s performance provides to the workplace. Maslow (1943) and Hertzberg (1959) believe that money is only an effective incentive factor to some extent. The Latin word "movere," which translates to "moving," is where the word "motivation" comes from. As a result, every term you read in a book or dictionary relates to the idea that motivation is a behavior that needs to be controlled in order to reach desired outcomes. Therefore, employee motivation is all about how empowered and engaged an employee feels in relation to the organization's goals.

Motivation is of two types:

  • Intrinsic motivation
  • Extrinsic motivation

Intrinsic motivation
An individual is motivated internally when they show intrinsic motivation. Because the outcomes are consistent with his or her vision, he or she wants to perform well at work.
Therefore, the strongest motivating elements are typically a person's strongly held views. These people share qualities like acceptance, curiosity, honor, and a desire for success.
Positive employee feedback and appreciation both improve intrinsic motivation, according to research. Therefore, if you are a manager, supervisor, or in a leadership position, please be thoughtful in the feedback or encouragement you offer. Make sure your personnel are aware of your expectations and that it empower

Extrinsic motivation
In fact, extrinsic motivation refers to a person's motivation being inspired by rewards and recognition from outside sources. Because of this, some people may never feel internally motivated, and only external inspiration will help them complete their objectives.
Extrinsic benefits may also occasionally increase a person's readiness to pick up new skills, according to study. Bonuses, benefits, prizes, and other types of rewards can also inspire people or provide them concrete feedback.    (Questionpro, 2020).

Challenges in employee motivation

Low Self-Confidence:
An employee who is motivated by confidence is more likely to complete the tasks required to reach his objectives. His willingness to stay and complete tasks is influenced by his confidence. Employees who lack confidence struggle to make decisions and maintain motivation until a task is completed because they feel worthless. Lack of self-confidence prevents an individual from asserting himself or building strong working relationships, both of which are necessary for success in the job. Additionally, the employee will put off doing something or put out little effort so that other people's problems, not his own, are the reason he fails.

Low Expectations for Success:                                                                                                               An employee's motivation is increased by having clear expectations of achievement. If an employer has high expectations for a worker, he or she is likely to be given interesting tasks to do. As a result, the worker's self-worth, confidence, and performance at work all rise. Having more self-assurance makes a person more motivated and open to taking on demanding new jobs in the future. Low expectations, on the other hand, guarantee that the worker will remain discouraged and perform below what the company expected. Additionally, if an employer has low expectations for a worker, he or she is less likely to give them the tools and resources they need to complete a task, which will lower their motivation even more.

Lack of Interest in Subject Matter:                                                                                                          A force or motivation that inspires an employee to behave is an example of motivation in action. An enthusiastic worker will be curious about a task and make an effort to complete it well. Lack of interest can cause motivation to decline and a goal to go unfulfilled. An employee won't put his all into his work if he is not interested in doing certain chores. Instead, he will pay more attention to other things, give less of himself to the task at hand, and do terribly.

Achievement Anxiety:                                                                                                                  Employees who struggle with success anxiety are sensitive to criticism or losing what they value as a form of punishment. As a result, employee conduct may be affected by achievement anxiety. Employees that are anxious may be less driven to complete tasks and show less interest in them. For instance, if the worker grows worried about potential negative feedback, he may start a task but stop before finishing it.

Fear of Failure:                                                                                                                           Employees who fear failure also fear not succeeding, so they avoid tasks they don't feel confident with. The employee views a lack of success as a failure and understands it as a sign of some sort of character fault. The more the employee's fear of failure, the less motivated he will be to work or make an effort to achieve goals because it is simpler to avoid tasks than to feel guilt for not finishing a task.
